Food Review: Kichn, Albert Court
Kichn: Cooking Up A Storm In The Kitchen
It was a weekday night when Amanda and I decided to check out Kichn for dinner. That was my first time there and I’ve heard many good reviews about Kichn and I could not wait to discover some hidden treasures for myself at Albert Court where the restaurant is located.
The place was not difficult to find as it’s right beside the Albert Court hotel with alfresco sitting. There was no signage with the word “Kichn” but from far, you will be able to see their motto “We’re Cooking Up A Storm” hugely written on the wall of their kitchen.

After we were seated, Sean, the co-owner of Kichn as well as the creative director of Pupil People greeted us with a friendly smile and exchanged handshakes as he have expected us to drop by for dinner.
The menu chit and colour pencils were neatly placed beside the bench in a little container so taking your orders are all done by your own. Of course, if you do require assistance, just wave around and the service staffs will be more than happy to help you.

Sean was very generous and nice to give us a complimentary Fried Calamari Rings ($6.90) which was sprinkled with seaweed powder and topped with a wedge of lemon. With a quick squeeze of a zest of lemon over those calamari rings, I cannot resist the urge to dig into it. The calamari rings was deep fried till it’s golden brown and it have a very soft tender texture which my teeth just sank right through it. It remained very tasty even after it have turn cold. This was how good their calamari rings are!

Now, the colour pencils come into play. Each drink is depicted by 1 colour pencil and you’re suppose to shade the water droplets in the menu. You can create your ice blended drink by choosing up to 3 flavours from the list.

Embrace your right to choose and I chose a Triple Blend ($6.90) of Mango, Pineapple and Honey giving it a sweet tropical fruity taste to it. It was smoothly blended and it have the right amount of everything. Giving it a balance taste of all the 3 flavours I asked for. It wasn’t too sweet nor blend at all. Perfect to chill on a hot day with your favourite flavour of ice blended!
Ordering the main course is done in 3 easy steps on the menu chit. You just have to tick your choice of Base-, a Main- and the Sauce- with the same colour pencil on the menu to form a set.
Amanda had a Chicken Roll with Ham & Cheese main ($10.90) with spaghetti base and cream sauce which is their best seller. The cream sauce was very rich and creamy with generous amount of sliced button mushrooms in it.

The chicken roll with ham and cheese was really hearty with chunky slices of chicken and thick layers of ham in it. What made it even better was the melted cheese beneath those layers of juicy meat and the breaded crust around it. The feeling it in my mouth was totally out of this world. I couldn’t find a word to describe it as it was really so good. I can only tell myself one thing. No wonder this is their best seller and people still come back for more of it.

I had a Beef Patty main ($9.90) with Fusilli base and Chilli Crab sauce. Initially, I had second thoughts of having chilli crab sauce as I had a bad experience previously at Pizza Hut. However, trusting that Kichn will do something special, I decided to go for a fusion pasta once again with the spicy chilli crab sauce.

When it was served, the chilli crab sauce caught my attention at the first glance. It was like a sea of orange goodness with egg whites forming the waves. The beef patty looks good too as it appears to be slightly charred and with a peppery, smokey flavour to it.

The fusilli met the chilli crab sauce and made very good friends with it as the goodness of it was trapped between each other. After eating it, I began to enjoy it more as the chilli crab sauce was oh-so-heavenly. Somehow or rather, it stole the show from the main dish which was suppose to be the beef patty. Sorry beef patty, I still remember you so I’m going to give you a bite right now.

The beef patty was very nicely done with the juiciness being trapped in it. The mince meat use for the beef patty was very nicely seasoned and the black pepper sauce sure pack a powerful punch to the taste buds. It was very tender but I find it a little oily for my preference.
Overall, I would say that this place serve very good quality food at a very reasonable price and I will definitely come back for more. It’s a very nice cosy atmosphere for dinner or just for a few friends to catch up good food.
